UK must make itself 'less economically attractive' to migrants, French interior minister says

The UK should make itself less economically attractive to migrants, France's interior minister has said.

Gerald Darmanin added that France would not be "held hostage" by Britain's domestic politics.

He was speaking after a meeting of his EU counterparts, to which Home Secretary Priti Patel was disinvited on Friday.

Paris reacted with dismay after Boris Johnson tweeted a five-point plan to tackle the number of people trying to cross the English Channel.

Mr Darmanin said, however, that the gathering had not been "anti-English".

Following Sunday's meeting, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency has agreed to provide a plane from Wednesday to monitor France's northern coastline.
