Pupils in years 7 and above should wear face masks in communal areas, government tells schools

The Department for Education has told schools in England that pupils in years 7 and above, and visitors, to wear face masks in communal areas.

The advice comes after the prime minister brought in new rules on face coverings following the detection of the Omicron variant in the UK.

The new COVID variant is thought to be more transmissible and health officials have warned about the possibility of the new strain being able to evade vaccines, although it is currently too early to tell if this is the case.
